Eris passed in front of a distant star in November 2010, in an event called occultation, which allowed the observatories on Earth do the necessary calculations to determine the size of dwarf planet.
Further analysis of the observations show that Eris is about the size of Pluto.
The discovery of Eris was one of the reasons for the creation of a new class of objects called dwarf planets and the reclassification of Pluto from planet to dwarf planet in 2006.
The astronomer, Bruno Sicardy, said is amazing what you can learn to observe a planet passing in front of a star with a common telescope.
Eris is three times farther from the sun than Pluto. ADS HERE
